Kids’ Willow Shirt sewing pattern (Sizes 4-14yrs)
This is the Willow Shirt pdf sewing pattern which is a casual easy fitting shirt suitable for boys and girls. The designer, Felicity Patterns, has made it adaptable for all seasons.
The Willow Shirt can be made as a shirt dress version. It was actually originally featured in the One Thimble Sewing E-Magazine and if you purchased Issue #10 of One Thimble you will already own a copy of this pattern.
Felicity Patterns has made this shirt with a simple collar and faced lapel, patch pockets, and sleeves with faced cuffs that can be worn turned up or drawn in at the wrist with a tab and button. A short sleeve option is also included in the tutorial, while the collar/lapel can be worn open or closed at the neck. The back has a double yoke and box pleat, while contrast color or print can be used on facings, pocket bands, cuffs, and tabs; this is optional. There are buttons or snaps on the front opening and sleeve cuffs; non-functional pocket buttons are optional.
The designer rates her pattern as suitable for an intermediate level of experience. Plain sewing skills only are required with the ability to make buttonholes. Neat and precise stitching and accurate seaming are essential to get the best results.
The pattern comes in eight sizes plus one bonus size. The eight sizes have been made to fit children 4 to 14 years as follows:-
- 4,
- 5,
- 6,
- 7,
- 8,
- 10,
- 12,
- 14.
You must always check the size chart before you start; chest and height measurements are the best guide for selecting the correct size for your child. The size chart gives approximate body dimensions only; the pattern has ease added. As a bonus, an extra size [16] has been added for children who are larger than the standard size 14. Sizing can vary greatly in children aged 10 years and older.
For the fabrics, the designer has chosen light to medium weight fabrics e.g. poplin, homespun, linen, pin-whale corduroy, flannel, chambray, and similar fabrics are suitable. Coordinating larger and smaller prints can be used to accentuate the styling details.
To print this wonderful pattern you will need an ordinary desktop printer. The pattern prints on A4 or plain paper. If you are in the USA you can use Letter size paper but the page border will be narrower on the length or you can use Legal size paper. The pattern file includes a very detailed sewing tutorial with step-by-step photos. The computer made digital pattern comes as a color-coded, full-size range nest with seam allowances included. Instructions for printing and assembling the pattern are included. All seam allowances and cutting instructions are marked on the pattern pieces.
