Fold Over Elastic Knit Shorts FREE sewing tutorial
Here’s a FREE sewing tutorial for some Fold Over Elastic Knit Shorts.
The designer, Cheryl from Sew Can Do, brings us a free tutorial and lots of information regarding sewing with Fold Over Elastic, and especially using it with knit fabrics.
As Cheryl says – Making knit fabric shorts can be really easy, but a lot of people feel some anxiety when it comes to working with knit fabrics, especially when they don’t have a serger. Cheryl loves working with knit fabrics and again as she says – You just need to know the best ways to work around the challenges.
One of her favorite ways of dealing with knits is using Fold Over Elastic (FOE). FOE is just as its name describes, a soft, smooth finish elastic that can be used like normal elastic or be folded in half and sewn to create a neat edge as you would with bias tape.
DOE can actually be used for countless options: cloth diapers, underwear, clothing, headbands, straps, binding & more. Any time you want to finish an edge easily, FOE is a great option. Especially when working with knits, because it has built-in elasticity and sews up very easily.
What you will need to make a pair of Fold Over Elastic Knit Shorts:-
- Interlock Knit Fabric (a ½ a yard of each worked fine for both of the designer’s 7 and 10 year olds),
- 1½ – 2 yards of Fold Over Elastic,
- A pair of knit shorts in the desired size,
- Sewing Notions: ballpoint needle, rotary cutter/shears, pins, disappearing marker, paper, pencil,
- Optional: Design ruler,
- Basic sewing supplies,
- A sewing machine.
