Easy Kid Shorts FREE sewing tutorial
The designer made these Easy Kid Shorts for her son.
As she says, elastic waist kids shorts and pants are SO easy to sew, sometimes I wonder why I buy them from the store at all.
This FREE tutorial will show you how to make a pattern from an existing pair of shorts and sew a simple pair of elastic waist shorts. This is a great skill to have, making a pattern for new clothes using existing clothing. You can do this for any size of shorts, or even use the same technique on pants or make some elastic waist PJ pants for yourself!
These shorts are made particularly comfortable and easy to get on and off, which is a very important feature in pants for a wriggly toddler. The designer says you can make them in any fabric, and that seersucker makes them perfect for the beach!
To make some shorts you will need:-
- Fabric – you can use anything. The designer likes lighter weight cotton because it is cool and comfy. The amount of fabric you need will depend on the size of shorts that you are making. The designer used less than 1/2 a yard on the ones in the pictures. Her son wears 18-24 month clothes.
- Elastic – the designer used 1″ elastic and again, the length will depend on the size of your kid.
Please note that this is not a free pattern. It’s a free tutorial – showing you how to make some new shorts by using some existing shorts. To start this project you will need to find a pair of shorts that fit your kid pretty well, in order that you can make your own pattern.
