Comfy Knit Dress FREE tutorial + pattern (size 2T-3T)

Here’s a Comfy Knit Dress FREE tutorial and pattern from the fabulous designer LBG Studio. The dress comes in size 2T-3T.

The idea for the dress came to the designer from a top her daughter has that she thought would translate really well into a dress. She wanted something that would be quick and easy to throw on – these dresses can be pulled on over the head…no need to unbutton the buttons. She said she cheated and sewed her buttons on through both layers of the bodice and skipped buttonholes.

She made two versions of the dress, one with a flouncy, twirly 2 tier skirt and one with a less full single-tier skirt with side seam pockets. Like the original top, she made these dresses using knits because they’re so soft, stretchy, and comfy. This tutorial includes printable bodice pattern pieces to sew a size 2T-3T dress {plus tips on how to make other sizes} and step by step directions for making two skirt variations. So you get a lot of stuff all for free.

The pink and white striped dress was a women’s t-shirt in its former life. Her daughter’s favorite part was the pockets, of course! The designer’s favorite part was using the existing hem and saving herself a step. She said she is kind of lazy like that!

The fabrics the designer used:-
  • The peach dress = a cotton knit jersey.
  • The grey dress = jersey knit from either Hobby Lobby or Joann. This was a heavier weight knit and easiest to work with.
  • The striped dress = women’s xxl t-shirt from Old Navy clearance rack. There was enough fabric for the outer bodice and skirt. I used some of the grey knit for the lining and pockets.

Some very useful notes from the designer regarding knits:-

  • Heavier weight knits are easier to work with than very lightweight knits,
  • Also, avoid super stretchy knits…that’s just a nightmare waiting to happen,
  • When sewing knits, don’t start your stitching at the very edge of the fabric…this often leads to fabric being “eaten” by your sewing machine,
  • A serger is helpful but not necessary; this dress can be made entirely on a regular sewing machine,
  • A walking foot is very, very helpful when sewing knits,
  • Though ballpoint needles are usually suggested for sewing knits, I have better luck with regular size 14 needles. Try them both and see what works best for you,
  • No need to buy yardage if you don’t want to – t-shirts and other upcycled knits will work too. If you are using t-shirts, etc, try to cut your fabric so that you can use the existing hem. less work for you!
